I promised many of you a blog update of the trip to Philadelphia and the wonderful exhibition at the PMA conference centre but I couldn't remember any of my details and a change over of computers left me stumped. The head must be clearer now and automatic has kicked in so hurrah! I am back.

The Collins Gallery has always been such a source of inspiration for me as a textile artist.

So few places in Scotland that have supported and inspired me as an artist.

With was with mixed emotions I attended a magnificent exhibition From Quilts to Couture in Kyrgyzstan and master class with the wonderful nuno artist Burul Mambetova.

The exhibition is on until mid September and well worth a visit for the riot of colour and variety of workmanship. A few images are included and I hope to complete the two garments made and promise to show them in a future blog.

Crafty Women of Girvan

This Saturday and Sunday saw me delighting in the company of the lovely ladies from Crafty Women. This multi talented group created a range of delightful felted items and ideas were racing.

As every I learned a lot from the sharing of ideas and solutions to suggested designs, mind you the 'fantisiser' fascinator gave us all a hearty laugh. I look forward to going back and working with the group again soon.

dying for colour

Early clipped sheep and lasts years fleeces to get used before the onslaught of new wool this year makes a flurry of work at Heartfelt Studio.

Using very local Llyn and blue faced Leicester and texel a wide range of wool is being prepared to be dyed.

Two ranges The Lilybank Lovelies with their soft and subtle colours provided by the natural growth in the garden and surrounding riverside using birch and cow parsley, dandelions and bog myrtle and a whole range of natural ingredients.

The Geodesic dome has been transformed into a dyers kitchen and is perfect for this workshop day .

The fortunate trial of an electric duncan carder has just made a world of difference to production.

The students created a lovely array of colours using acid wool dyes but observing the mordant and dying process of the natural dyes.

Couple that with some great cooking in the cheese scones and amazing pavlova...now that was a piece of artwork in itself...see some of the lovely things created.

I wanted to look at a creative workshop in a very reflective way and yes I admit ....this one I did really for me but what a lot I learned by opening this up in workshop form. The day was glorious and the outside 'drawing' and inspiration time amongst the sweet bird song and softly unfolding spring greens certainly helped.

We shared the point of inspiration of our own designs and by articulating them to one another we had a clearer starting point.

Each of us choose a different method but as the process of design was most important we started with a 'sheet' of prefelt so our full time and energy could be put into the creation process in the time limit we had.

Fellow felters and friends gathered for a very relaxing and inspiring two days in Dunblane.

Amidst divine chocolate cake and scrumptious shortbread great creations and inspiration were apparent in new apparel.

SECC Glasgow

The interest at the show in feltmaking was very apparent by the crowds of interested people from all ages who we in awe at the variety of lovely work from some of our members. It was a great opportunity for

sharing our passion not just with the public but with the willing helpers who came and gave their time. Without all the helpers events like this wouldn't be possible and special thanks go to Ann Ross and Ewa Kuniczak for their dedication and hard work organising this and many other major events in the world of Scottish feltmaking.

I had to include a picture of the underwater knitted scene that was certainly the star of the show...it was inspiration to all who visited.

The lovely Kilmartin goes 3d

Saturdays workshop at Kilmartin House Museum was a day of fun and laughter and great relaxed creativity. A big mix of ages and abilities provided a wonderful range of ideas and view points.Those that tried the 3d needle felting made very individual creatures with cheeky personalities. Apologies to the highland cow who appears here without his 'alpaca coat' but even in his nakedness he is very beautiful. He enjoyed the company of his cheeky sheep friend.

Trees created from bark and the lovely lichen which coats the limbs of bare trees in the glen like some ghostly echo showing the purity of the air in Kilmartin Glen.

Thanks to all the lovely students who shared their skills and their presence ( lets not forget about the good food too )Any other photos would also be appreciated.

Spring is defiantly raising the ground in the form of new slips of life in snowdrops and slivers of potential daffodils.

Heartfelt Studio has been very busy organising lots of workshops up and down the country.

Travelling in our beautiful countryside at this time of the year is inspiring in ideas of form and colour. The longer evenings have allowed the last vestiges of light to be used to their full potential This weekend was a delightful workshop with many new felting friends on advancing with Needle Embellishing.

There was a great diversity of work and as usual, with the way I like to allow student to journey on their learning , many variable ideas were tried and learning given and received by all.

Winter wonder December 2010

It has been a delightful experience for me to have so many creative people around me for the run up and the whole of this weekend. The weather was one of the toughest two weeks we have had this Winter and those that braved the elements were glad they had.

I guess more than the twinkling lights and the snug warm of the wood burning stove in the felt lined yurt it was the sharing that made the whole event...sharing of skills , of jobs to be done and songs to be sung. this whole event epitomises why I do what I do ...why on the hard days I struggle to focus on my self imposed workload and sometimes silent, alone work time. It is a way of life for me and weekends like this make it all worthwhile so a great big thank you to those who could make it or support it and especially for new friends made and old friendships rekindled.

The Yurt and Squirt in the Phoenix park in Dublin

Heritage week in Ireland and the CCOI Feltmakers Ireland supported the journey of the Scottish Story telling yurt on its travels this summer. We set up the yurt and the squirt in the beautiful setting of the Phoenix park Dublin. The Irish feltmakers have a wonderful studio space there and we had many members of the public who came by and learned about the art of feltmaking.

On Saturday I had a wonderful session with the very talented group who opted to lean about using native wools, a subject dear to my heart.

The group are a lively dedicated fun loving bunch and myself and my family had a lovely time in their care.

I hope to join in with them again soon.

Summer school in Greenock

This year was a busy 3 days of feltmaking at the McLean gallery in Greenock.

12 students ...6 beginners and 6 who attended the previous years workshop and are forging ahead with felting in Greenock with their new felt group.

We covered all the basics but this time with a twist to allow the newbies time to fit in and the experienced ones o have a new slant on things ...a challenge.

As always this group were dynamic and worked so hard and so well together that they had to be forced from their tables to have the wonderful lunch laid on by the organisers.

Day 3 saw us changing room to the art gallery upstairs and mountains of textiles made their way up the stairs to the beautiful setting of the art gallery and the priceless painting made us a little more cautious with our water.

I think you will agree there was some wonderful work produced during this intense time but well worth it.

A fantastic weekend was had by all at the two days of intensive workshops at the beautiful seting of the Steeple in the heart of Newburgh.
The workshops were organised by Twist Fibres, a treasure house of fibre wonderment.
Sturday took students through the skill of making Nuno felt and breaking down the myths of this recent art in feltmaking.
